Improving JPEG Baseline Compression
The original JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) still image data compression standard
(ITU-T T.81 | ISO 10918:1 ) was frozen in the early 90's. It had several parts, but most
users are only aware of the Baseline mode. This widely used standard was the eort of a
joint committee sponsored by ISO/IEC and ITU-T (formerly CCITT). The original committee
JPEG committee moved on and created several more joint and non-joint standards. The ITU-T
parent was receptive to building enhancements onto the rst JPEG standard. The rst ITU-only
upgrade (T.851) came out in September 2005. It added an additional (fee-free) arithmetic coder,
extended the allowed DCT input precision, and created an alternative baseline coder. This talk
will review JPEG baseline and show the compression improvements made possible (without a
quality change) by using the arithmetic coder in T.851. The original JPEG baseline is lossly
convertible into and out of this new standard.
Short Biography of Joan L. Mitchell
Dr. Joan L. Mitchell graduated from Stanford University with a B.S. in physics. She received her M.S. and PhD. degrees in physics from the
University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. She joined the IBM T. J. Watson Research Center immediately after completing her PhD. In 1999
she started working with IBM Printing Systems Division in Boulder, CO. She was a member of the ISO and CCITT international Joint Photographic
Experts Group which standardized the color image JPEG compression algorithm. She has co-authored books about JPEG and MPEG and recently
wrote a mentoring book. She is a member of APS, IEEE (Fellow), IS&T, Sigma Xi and the National Academy of Engineering. She is co-inventor on more
than 88 patents and became an IBM Fellow in 2001. In June 2007 IBM and Ricoh formed a new joint venture from the IBM Printing Systems Division,
called the InfoPrint Solutions Company. She retired from IBM and joined the new company as a Fellow.
